5 Signs It’s Time To Toss Your Makeup, Skincare, and Toiletry Items
Let’s be real, most of us have a stash of beauty and toiletry products we’ve been hanging on to for way too long. Maybe it was expensive, maybe you loved it once and forgot about it, the packaging was simply too cute to throw away or maybe you just didn’t realize it had an expiration date. Yep, your makeup, skincare, and even toiletries do expire. And using them past their prime? Not a good look (or a healthy one).
Whether you’re a glam girl, a skincare king, or someone just trying to keep their morning routine simple, this blog is for you.
Here are 5 signs it's time to say goodbye and toss those products:
1. The Texture or Smell Has Changed
If your moisturizer feels grainy or your favorite lotion smells like crayons (yes, that can happen), it’s likely gone bad. Products break down over time, especially when exposed to heat, air, and bacteria. When in doubt, give it a sniff or a small swatch. If it’s off, toss it.
2. It’s Been Open Longer Than You Can Remember
Most products have a little symbol on the packaging that shows how long it's good for after opening. Usually 6M, 12M, 24M (months). This is called the Period After Opening (PAO) symbol. It’s a small icon that looks like a jar with the lid open, which can be found near the barcode or ingredients list on the packaging.
If your product doesn't have this symbol, check for a batch code or printed expiration date instead. When in doubt, refer to my “Makeup Expiration Cheat Sheet” as a guide.
If you can’t remember when you opened it or how long it’s been sitting around, it’s probably time to let it go. Trust your gut.
3. It’s Causing Breakouts, Irritation, or Just Feels Different on the Skin
Skin acting funny lately? That old foundation or beard cream could be the reason. As ingredients age, they become less effective — or worse, they can start to irritate your skin. Healthy skin starts with fresh products.
“If your favorite product has expired or been discontinued, it’s best to resist the temptation to keep using it, as you put yourself at health risks. Instead, explore alternatives by finding a similar product from another brand or consult with a makeup artist or beauty professional to help you find or custom blend an alternative.”
4. It’s Separated or Changed Color
Liquid products like serums, foundations, and even shampoos can separate or shift in color. If your products look like oil and water or the shade is totally different from when you bought it, that’s your cue.
5. The Packaging Is Damaged or Leaking
Broken pumps, cracked caps, or packaging that doesn’t close properly can let in air and bacteria. Even if the product seems okay, it’s not worth the risk. It’s better to be safe and sanitary.
💡 PRO TIP
Write the month and year you first opened the product on the packaging using a Sharpie. It saves you from playing the guessing game later on.
